Serena Williams is arguably the greatest female athlete of all time. Maybe even the greatest athlete, period. However, despite her accomplishments, Williams’ immeasurable talent continues to breed hatred and disrespect.
Earlier this week, Serena announced her first pregnancy via a Snapchat photo of her growing baby bump. Amid the surprising news, Romanian Fed Cup captain, Ilie Nastase, questioned the physical characteristics of Williams’ child, saying, “Let’s see what colour it has. Chocolate with milk?”
Nastase’ comments came four months after Williams announced her engagement to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.
As a result, the International Tennis Federation has placed Nastase under investigation for his racist, discriminatory comments about the superstar athlete and her unborn child.
“The ITF does not tolerate discriminatory, offensive language and behavior of any kind,” the Federation said in a statement. “We are aware of alleged comments made by Romanian captain Ilie Nastase and have begun an immediate investigation so that we have the full facts of the situation before taking further and appropriate actions.”
