One day after Kathy Griffin posted a photo holding the faux head of a bloody beheaded Donald Trump, both Squatty Potty and CNN have revealed that they have severed business ties with the comedian.
Earlier this month, Squatty Potty, a small family business that designs bathroom products, announced its partnership with the Griffin, launching a commercial featuring the comedian. Three weeks later, the company announced that the partnership had come to an end, as a result of the controversial image.
“We were shocked and disappointed to learn about the image Ms. Griffin shared today, it was deeply inappropriate and runs contrary to the core values our company stands for,” CEO Bobby Edwards said in a statement. “In response, Squatty Potty has suspended its ad campaign featuring Ms. Griffin. We have acted swiftly and decisively to demonstrate our commitment to a culture of decency, civility, and tolerance.”
CNN also announced their split from Griffin, revealing that they have terminated their agreement with the comedian to appear on the network’s New Year’s Eve special with Anderson Cooper.
While, the image comprised Griffin’s work relationships and sparked widespread backlash, it also caught the attention of Trump and the Secret Service, both of whom addressed the matter via Twitter.
“Kathy Griffin should be ashamed of herself. My children, especially my 11-year-old son, Barron, are having a hard time with this. Sick!” Trump tweeted.
“On it! @SecretService has a robust protective intelligence division that monitors open source reporting & social media to evaluate threats,” the United States Secret service tweeted, adding “Threats made against @SecretService protectees receive the highest priority of all of our investigations. #ProtectionNeverRests.”
