Today we celebrate the 46th birthday of Shawn “Jay Z” Carter. It’s no question that the man can sell us pretty much anything. He told us to drink Cristal champagne, then single-handedly made us stop. It’s no wonder that Jay Z stays at the top of the FORBES richest hip hop artists list. To celebrate his birthday and his Ballerificness, It’s only right we post 10 times Jay Z shouted out his endorsements. Â
*Note* These are companies he endorses, owns, etc…
10. “That D’usse Is The Shit, If I Do Say So Myself” – Drunk In Love
Jay Z has mentioned Dusse cognac a million times before this song but it’s the way he repeats it as Beyonce twerks in front of him that makes you really want to buy it.
9. “50/50 venture with them S dots kickin off. Armadale poppin now, only bring a nigga more” – Excuse Me Miss
Roughly 13 or so years ago, it was rumored that Jay Z and Dame Dash purchased the vodka company Armadale. In time it was pretty obvious that Jay didn’t have much involvement in the brand and it kind of disappeared for a while. Let us not forget Jigga’s mention of his S. Carter sneaker collaboration with Reebok. Â Between Jay, 50, Birdman and a few others, there was no shortage of rappers with their own line of kicks.Â
8. “Now you chillin’ with a boss, bitch of course SC on the sleeve. At the 40/40 club, ESPN on the screen” – Dirt Off Your Shoulder
The first time I recall Jay Z mentioning the 40/40 was in “Dirt Off Your Shoulder,” and he’s obviously mentioned it a few more times since then. In 2003 Jay opened his first 40/40 Club sports bar in New York. He then expanded to Atlantic City, Vegas and Atlanta.Â
7. “My favorite hue is Jay Z blue” – Go Crazy
Jay Z has his own color. Does it really get any better than that? GMC even made a Jay Z Blue Denali. Your fave could never.
6. “All this ace of spade I drank, just to piss out. I mean I like the taste, could have saved myself six hours” – Success
Jay Z was endorsing Ace of Spade (Armand de Brignac) champagne long before the luxury spirits company was cutting checks. Ever since Cristal said they didn’t want black people drinking their champagne, Jay Z has been putting the gold bottles in his videos and singing their praises. The early endorsement wasn’t in vain though, in 2014 Jay bought the company. Now he can drink all the Ace he wants.Â
5. “And when I’m no longer here to shade her face from the glare, I’ll give her my share of Carol’s Daughter and a new beach chair” – Beach Chair
Before there was Blue Ivy, there was Beach Chair. A lot of people don’t know that Jay Z invested in the haircare company. He mentions it briefly in two songs. It’s awesome that before Blue was ever born, he already knew what he planned to do with his money. Isn’t that the reason we work so hard? To pass it down?
4. “Clothing, movie, and films, we come to conquer it all. Rocawear, eighty mill in like, eighteen months. You could bullshit with rap if you want, motherfuckers” – 4 Da Fam
Jay Z basically broke down how much of a business man he is in this Amil track then basically told everyone else to step their game up. Â That’s nothing but some light weight stunting.Â
3. “Chi-town’s D-Rose/I’m movin’ the Nets to BK” – Niggas In Paris
Jay Z may have been a minority owner in the Nets but he kept his word when he moved the New Jersey Nets to Brooklyn. Â He also used his ownership to leverage a deal with the Barclays Center, which at the time hadn’t even been built yet. He’s not a businessman, he’s a business, man.
2. “This is Roc Nation Pledge your allegiance” – Run This Town
Jay basically said Roc Nation is an army, better yet a navy, and he may have been right ? Roc Nation is the management and/or record label for so many of music’s heavyweights. When that wasn’t enough, he branched of into sports, where Roc Nation Sports is slowly beginning to become a premiere agency. Â Â
1. “Tidal / My own label / same difference / Oh niggas is skeptical of they own shit / You bought nine iPhones and Steve Jobs is rich / Phil Knight worth trillions you still bought those kicks / Spotify’s nine billion and they ain’t say shit” – Tidal B. Sides Freestyle
Consider this one more of a wild card. While this wasn’t from a song, Jay Z did bless fans at his Tidal B: Sides concert with a freestyle where he explained his thoughts on Tidal and the support (or lack thereof) he had been receiving. He made some valid points.Â
