Wednesday, December 2, Footwear News will honor Kanye West with the “Shoe Of The Year Award.”
The award will acknowledge the success and cultural imprint of Kanye and adidas Yeezy Boost. In a statement explaining their decision, the sneaker source stated, “The sneaker releases dominated the market in 2015, as demand for the product crashed servers, sparked extraordinary resale value, and created a need for mob control in stores.”
While Kanye’s clothing design may not be widely appealing, there’s no denying the Yeezy Boosts are a fan favorite. Since Kanye announced his collaboration with adidas, the shoes have transcended the role of style accessory and shifted into the role of cultural necessity.
The Yeezy Boost has become one of the most sought after sneakers in pop culture alongside the Jordan Brand, and continues to grow in popularity. Kanye’s motive as a designer has remained much bigger than just watching fans flood sneaker stores and rush to check out stands with their Boosts in hand.
“Fashion is so important because designers are trained thinkers of taste. The reason I have been trying to build relationships in that world is because being a celebrity is the highest form of communication — we are like walking networks or TV shows or brands. I think bad taste is vulgar — it’s like cursing. I believe the world can be saved by design, because what is the most vulgar thing someone could do? Good taste is the opposite of that,” said Kanye at the Cannes Lions International.
Congrats to Kanye on receiving this award.
