Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke is known for his undying support of Trump and his social media presence that made him a favorite amongst conservatives nationwide. Milwaukee County Clerk, George Christenson, received a resignation letter from Clarke on Thursday.
The resignation letter did not state why Clarke was leaving, especially since he has more than year left in his term. Clarke did however leave an email address that was to be used for any further questions but had not responded immediately to inquiries.
Clarke was one of few African-Americans to speak at last year’s Republican National Convention. He has been vocal about gun rights and critical of the Black Lives Matter movement even saying things like “Stop trying to fix the police. Fix the ghetto.”
Clarke has been a sheriff in Milwaukee since 2002. Before that, he spent decades with the city’s police department where his inmate management skills were questioned after a dehydration death of an inmate.
Republican Governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker, will be responsible for appointing someone to serve the remainder of Clarke’s term which will run through 2018.
