Pennsylvania Fire Chief Calls Steelers Head Coach a “No Good Nigg**” Over Anthem Decision

More than a year ago, Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem in protest of police brutality, racial injustices and inequality in this country. Initially, many were opposed to the protest during the national song. However, after Donald Trump targeted those who participated in the peaceful protest, calling them “sons of bitches” who deserve to be fired or suspended; many chose to take a stand against Trump’s divisive comments and promote unity. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Trump’s attack forced the merger of sports and politics, as almost every team owner and head coach came forward to denounce the comments. Several teams used the opportunity to lock arms in solidarity against Trump, while others took a knee to continue the movement against racial injustices. However, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin refused to let Trump divide his team. Instead of choosing a side in the debate about the “national anthem” protest, the Steelers declined to participate in the anthem all together. While some praised Tomlin’s decision, others took offense and expressed their frustrations on social media. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Paul Smith, the chief of Cecil Volunteer Fire Station #2, used his platform to share his thoughts about Tomlin’s decision to skip the anthem, saying, “Tomlin just added himself to the list of no good Nigg*rs. Yes I said it.” However, his post was met with widespread backlash, prompting the Pennsylvania fire chief to apologize for his racist statement. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“I am embarrassed at this,” Smith told KDKA. “I want to apologize. I was frustrated and angry at the Steelers not standing [for] the anthem. This had nothing to do with my fire department. I regret what I said. My fire department should never have been dragged into this. It was a bad judgment by me, for which I am very embarrassed for them and my township.”

Although the Cecil Township Board of Supervisors said they were “deeply disturbed” by Smith’s comment, it remains unclear if Smith remains in his position.

UPDATE 6:22 p.m. : Paul Smith has resigned.
