Who knew that at one point in his life, professional wrestler turned actor, Â Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, battled depression? On an upcoming episode of Oprah’s Master Class, The Rock reveals that things haven’t always been great in his life.
“I found that with depression one of the most important things you can realize is that you’re not alone. You’re not the first to go through it. You’re not going to be the last to go through it, and often times it happens. You feel like you’re alone,” he says in the episode’s trailer. “You feel like it’s only you, and you’re in your bubble, and I wish I had someone at that time who could just pull me aside and say, ‘Hey, it’s going to be OK.’Â “
The Rock offers advice to anyone who may be going through something. He says, “You just have to remember: Hold on to that fundamental quality of faith. Have faith that on the other side of your pain is something good.”
Depression is something that a lot of us go through but feel it is taboo to talk about. In the African American community, we’re taught to pray it away or that we’re just sad for the moment, but depression is very real and for so many people they can’t see the light at the other side of their pain because they’ve been in pain for so long.Â
For The Rock, being cut by the Calgary Stampede football team was hard on him. He spent a month and a half in a depression over it before the team called him back and asked him to return. The Rock said that his gut feeling told him that there was something else out there for him. So against his father’s advice, he got into the wrestling business. The rest is history.
The Rock’s episode of Oprah’s Master Class airs Sunday at 8pm EST.
