NAACP President Says Trump’s Plan To Attend The Opening Celebration For The Civil Rights Museum in Mississippi Is An Insult

In the wake of Donald Trump’s plan to attend Saturday’s opening celebration for a civil rights museum in Mississippi, the NAACP has strongly suggested that Trump stay home. In fact, the NAACP President Derrick Johnson said his attendance would be an insult to the Civil Rights movement altogether.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“President Trump’s statements and policies regarding the protection and enforcement of civil rights have been abysmal, and his attendance is an affront to the veterans of the civil rights movement,” Johnson said. “He has created a commission to reinforce voter suppression, refused to denounce white supremacists, and overall, has created a racially hostile climate in this nation.”

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

According to The Washington Post, other leaders and black ministers have organized a protest for if/when Trump decides to visit the museum. In turn, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who has taken part in relaying Trump’s divisive views and policies, said the protests plans are “honestly very sad.”

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“I think this is something that should bring the country together to celebrate the opening of this museum and highlighting [the] civil rights movement and the progress that we’ve made,” she said on Tuesday. “And I would hope that those individuals would join in that celebration instead of protesting it.”

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“However, they have every right to protest,” she continued.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The opening celebration of the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum in Jackson, Mississippi is set to include several guest speakers, from the governor to civil rights leader, Rep. John Lewis.
