Melania Trump turned heads at the 2018 State of the Union in a stark white Christian Dior pantsuit, paired with a Dolce & Gabbana blouse and Christian Louboutin heels. Social media quickly started debating what the look meant.
According to BuzzFeed News, Melania arrived separately from her husband, riding with guests she invited to her box, including the parents of two girls killed by gang members. Her communications director, Stephanie Grisham, said the first lady “does not concern herself with what others think about her fashion.” Her office did not say whether the outfit was meant as a statement.
It was her first public appearance with the president since reports that he paid adult film actress Stormy Daniels to stay quiet about an alleged affair, which the White House has denied.
Some female lawmakers wore black in support of the movement against sexual harassment and assault. Others pointed out that white is tied to the women’s suffrage movement. Democratic women wore white to a Trump address last year, and according to PEOPLE, Hillary Clinton wore white to the inauguration.
Twitter had plenty to say. Matthew Miller tweeted, “Welcome to the resistance, Melania.” Her office said she later met up with her husband and family and rode back to the White House with them.
