As Puerto Rico continues to recover from the massive damage and destruction caused by Hurricane Maria, #Akon says he could have remedied the situation months ago.
On Friday, TMZ caught up with the singer to discuss the progress in the Puerto Rican relief efforts. Although more than 80% of the island’s residents have had their power restored, Akon says his organization, Akon Lighting Africa, could have had the power up and running within 30 days after the devastating storm.

Akon’s organization is no stranger to big projects, as the organization has provided electricity to 14 African countries. However, when he tried to assist in restoration efforts for Puerto Rico, the government rejected him.

“It’s politics, propaganda and special interests. They didn’t care about the people. If that was the case, they would have allowed us to go in and provide the solution,” Akon told TMZ.
