Just when we thought Netflix couldn’t be intertwined with something even more controversial than Monique’s outcry. They went straight for the ringer when they decided to give the ex NAACP leader of the Spokane branch, Rachel Dolezal, a Netflix special of her own titled “The Rachel Divide.” It took NO time for Twitter to drag them both over the fact that she even has a special, and Monique hasn’t seen justice.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Y’all do remember Rachel Dolezal, right? The so-called transracial leader that the culture snapped on for lying about her race and being a part of an all-black organization? Well, the popular streaming service documented her life after the national news story turned her into a trending topic, and created a documentary, set to be released in April. The trailer for the documentary was released this week and it’s almost as hard to watch as her previous interviews crying “I feel black.” Her son is also featured in the film, and shown in distress about the fact that his mom won’t just “let it go away,” as they get into a disagreement about why she feels the need to redeem herself in the public eye anyway. He prods her that this is “gonna affect more than just your life.”

The Netflix documentary is set to premiere April 27th. Everyone is outraged about the whole thing but director, Laura Brownson, had this to say to Vulture about her motivation for telling the Rachel Dolezal story…
“In making the film, I came to a deeper understanding of the raw nerve that Rachel hits in our society, but I also learned that her motivations to identify as she does are far more complicated than most realize… Regardless of how people feel about Rachel, I hope the film will challenge audiences to think more deeply about race and identity in America.”

What is the there to really discuss race and identity? Your DNA creates you one way, right? Or do you get to make the choice?
#WoahVicky & #RachelDolezal seem to think so.
