A financial aid controversy at Howard University has put a student named Tyrone in the national spotlight, and now he is reportedly taking legal action.
Late last week, an anonymous report circulated about misused university grants at Howard, where six employees were reportedly fired. The report named Tyrone, a student employee, as one of the people who benefited from the funds. The accusations claimed he received more than $400,000. Tyrone quickly became a trending topic online, with many people on Twitter reacting to his social media posts.
Tyrone has denied the embezzlement allegations and has said the money he received from the school was at the university’s discretion.
Now his legal team is pushing back on how his private records ended up public. His lawyer, James Walker, spoke to CBS News. “What’s more troubling to me is that Howard hasn’t come out and apologized to this young man. This could be anyone’s son, nephew, brother,” Walker said. “Regardless, Howard should have come out and said we’re sorry, this should not have happened, his file should not have gotten leaked.”
Walker also tied the situation to the wider student protests on campus. “The university has a chance here to show how they operate and run the university and how they move swiftly to fix a problem,” he said. “The reason students are protesting is because they feel like every one of their issues, every one of their demands over the years are not met in a sufficient or quick or swift manner.”
According to Aya Elamroussi of the AFRO, Tyrone plans to file a $10 million lawsuit against the university over his leaked financial records. Baller Alert has not seen a response from Howard University to the reported lawsuit.
