Despite Russia’s warning against missile strikes in Syria, Donald Trump said Wednesday that missiles “will be coming” in response to Syria’s alleged chemical attack that killed at least 40 people.

“Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria,” Trump tweeted in response to the warning. “Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and ‘smart!’ You shouldn’t be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it.”

According to NPR, Russia had been fighting alongside the Syrian government in the Syrian civil war since 2015, which prompted Russian lawmakers to warn Trump against the strike. Many claimed that the nation would view the U.S. airstrike as a war crime that would ultimately trigger a clash between the former enemies.

“Smart missiles should fly towards terrorists, not the legitimate government which has been fighting against international terrorism in its territory for several years,” a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry said in response to Trump’s threat.

However, amid the back and forth, Trump called for a truce, as things continued to heat up between the two nations.

“Our relationship with Russia is worse now than it has ever been, and that includes the Cold War,” Trump claimed. “There is no reason for this. Russia needs us to help with their economy, something that would be very easy to do, and we need all nations to work together. Stop the arms race?”

In the meantime, both Russian military and the Syrian Government have denied the use of poison gas.
