Kelis is speaking out about her marriage to Nas. In an interview with Hollywood Unlocked in April 2018, the singer said her five year marriage to the Queens rapper included abuse.
“There was a lot of mental and physical abuse,” Kelis said, adding that drinking was part of the picture. She also said she was not ready to leave at the time because she loved him and considered the marriage her commitment.
According to Kelis, there were arguments and fights that the couple would move past the next morning as if nothing had happened. She said she has never painted herself as a saint and that she fought back, and she noted that her children will eventually learn about that part of her history.
Kelis compared her own experience to the one made public in February 2009 when photos of Rihanna surfaced after her assault by Chris Brown. She said she had bruises at that time too and did not fully realize what she was living through until she saw them.
Kelis filed for divorce in April 2009 while pregnant with the couple’s son. She told the interviewer she has since moved on, remarried and built a good life.
Nas had not responded publicly to the allegations at the time of this report, and a representative for the rapper did not respond to requests for comment.
