Beef in Hip-Hop is so necessary for the community. It is not about the physical but the punch lines that you bring to your opponent. Now if you start a beef, it is only right to finish it but understand that there are ‘NO RULES.’ No one is off limits and it is not the time or place to become sensitive or in your feelings because someone said something you didn’t like or agree with.
The latest Rap Beef between Pusha T and Drake, has some people in their feelings. Let’s not forget some of the greats had their own beefs and they were nothing to play with. They did not care about the opponent’s feelings. They wanted to ensure that you heard what they said and meant it.
Let’s take a trip down memory lane with some of the hottest rap beefs and punchlines of all time in no particular order….
NWA vs. Ice Cube
After leaving NWA, Ice Cube created his own success without the group. But, when others see that you are doing good without them, they want to see you fail in every aspect. NWA began throwing shots towards Ice Cube and he released “No Vaseline:” “Yella Boy’s on your team, so you’re losing/Ay yo, Dre, stick to producing/Calling me Arnold, but you Benedict/Eazy-E saw your ass and went in it quick/You got jealous when I got my own company/But I’m a man, and ain’t nobody humping me.”
Nas vs. Jay-Z
Nas and Jay-Z took rap beef to another level and didn’t care what was said. The beef between the New York natives apparently started when Nas ignored Jay-Z’s request to be on his debut album, which led to multiple records being released throwing shots at one another. The two records that stood out to everyone was Nas’ “Ether” record and Jay-Z’s “Supa Ugly”. In this battle, many would say Nas won the battle with “Ether” but when Jay-Z said, “Me and the boy A.I. got more in common than just balling and rhyming …Get it? More in Carmen..I came in your Bentley backseat, skeeted in your Jeep…Left condoms on your baby seat,” that’s when the beef catapulted to the next level. Definitely an interesting battle!
Notorious B.I.G. vs. 2Pac
The most notable beef of all time would be Biggie vs. 2Pac, which led to East Coast vs. West Coast drama. The two started out as friends but when Pac got shot after a leaving the studio in New York, things began to take a turn for the worse. After Pac was shot, Biggie released “Who Shot Ya?,” which in return Pac released “Hit em Up.” In the opening of the song, 2Pac says, “I ain’t got no motherfucking friends/That’s why I fucked your bitch, you fat motherf*cker.”
