Tessa Thompon says she and Janelle Monae love each other deeply in new interview.
On Friday, the 34-year-old actress opened about being bisexual and the various relationship rumors regarding her and singer-songwriter Janelle Monae. “We love each other deeply, we’re so close. We vibrate on the same frequency,” Thompson said of Monae. “If people want to speculate about what we are, that’s okay. It doesn’t bother me.”
Most of those rumors flared up around the time Monae dropped a music video to her hit song “Dirty Computer” which featured Thompson as Monae’s love interest. The video sparked tons of inquisitive responses from people wanting to know if the two were together. Thompson’s open mind, it seems, can be partially attributed to her upbringing. The actress mentioned that her household was an accepting one. “[In my family] you can be anything you want to be. I’m attracted to men and also to women. If I bring a woman home, [or] a man, we don’t even have to have the discussion,” she said.

“I want everyone else to have that freedom and support that I have from my loved ones,” she added. “But so many people don’t. So, do I have a responsibility to talk about that? Do I have a responsibility to say in a public space that this is my person?” she added.

Back in April, Monae came out as pansexual in an interview with Rolling Stone but never mentioned if she was dating anyone or interested. “It’s tricky because Janelle and I are just really private people and we’re both trying to navigate how you reconcile wanting to have that privacy and space and also wanting to use your platform and influence,” Thompson continued.
