By now, we all know that there’s no lengths to how far social media can take you. For some users, social media has made them millions. For some users, social media has landed them their dream job.
And according to one twitter user’s NY Times op-ed, one tweet has landed her in therapy.
In June, a woman by the name of Wanna Thompson took to her personal twitter account to critique Nicki Minaj and suggest a “new direction” for the rapper.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“You know how dope it would be if Nicki put out mature content? Just reflecting on past relationships, being a boss, hardships, etc. She’s touching 40 soon, a new direction is needed,” she said in full.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Shortly after the tweet was posted, Thompson aired out messages that allegedly came directly from Minaj in response.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“When ya ugly a*s was 24, you was pushing 30? I’m 34, I’m pushing 40? Eat a d*ck you hatin ass h*e,” the DM read. “Got the nerve to have a Trini flag on your page. You must not have heard the Pinkprint or “Pills N Potion” “Bed of Lies” “Save Me” My recent feature with Alicia Keys, Tasha Cobbs. Just say you jealous. I’m rich, famous, intelligent, pretty and go! But wait, leave my balls. Tired of you sucking on them,”.

According to Thompson, what happened next has left her “mentally depleted.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thompson says Minaj’s fans have attacked her via every aspect of personal contact. Thompson posted threats that allegedly came from fans of the rapper. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“If I knew it would get this much harassment and that my daughter would be affected, I don’t think that I would have posted it,” she said. “Every person has a right to defend themselves and react to certain statements. But when you start to insult somebody, you’ve crossed a line. You have a responsibility as a public figure to present yourself in a certain way,” she said.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
At the time of the tweet, Thompson was fired from interning as a content contributor for Karen Civil’s media company for violating a NDA and contract. According to a representative of the company, Thompson’s Minaj commentary came in a five-part rant that was only removed after the company warned her of a violation. Per the representative, after the team privately addressed the situation Thompson went on to post more violations online.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ultimately, the situation brought a ton of criticism upon Minaj from people who believe that celebrities should not “clap back” online.
