On Wednesday, a woman was sentenced to nine years behind bars after she confessed to the brutal murder of her father over his collection of child porn, which including inappropriate pictures of herself.
According to Fox News, Barbara Coombes, 63, turned herself into police on Jan, 7. 2018, for the 2006 murder of her father, Kenneth Coombes. She said she “snapped” exactly 12 years prior when she found naked photos of herself and another kid in her father’s possession.
In her confession, Coombes said she had been her father’s “sex slave” for years, as well as his rape victim. She said he took her to a photography club, where he “forced her to display her genitals while other men took photos of her.”
“I could feel a black cloud appearing over me,” she said in court, as she explained the 2006 incident. “In a haze of disgust and disbelief, I picked up a shovel I had been gardening with and walked into the living room where my father was standing.”
As she continued, she said she hit Kenneth in the back of the head with a shovel and slit his throat with a blade. After that, according to the Washington Post, she wrapped his body in a rug and buried him in the backyard.
To cover her tracks, Coombes told her family that Kenneth died suddenly and was cremated in the hospital, while the neighbors believed the man just disappeared.
According to the publication, Coombes’ lawyer doubled down on his client’s statement. “She had no friends, no life outside the house where she was treated as a slave and controlled by her father and had no one to talk to,” Heslop said, adding that Kenneth may have been the father of Coombes’ first child, who is now deceased.
On Wednesday, Coombes pleaded not guilty to the murder, but “guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility.” As a result, she was sentenced to nine years in prison, as a judge refused to believe she had acted in self-defense.
Instead, he said “she killed while suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and severe depression as a result of 40 years of extreme mental, physical and sexual abuse at the hands of your father,” but added that she only came forward because she had no other choice.
