Lena Waithe and podcaster #KidFury are teaming up on a HBO comedy series that tells the story of a gay Black man trying to figure out “adulthood and responsibility” while gradually understanding his undiagnosed clinical depression.
Waithe will serve as an executive producer on the series which follows the 20-year-old character Greg who lives in New York. Fury, whose name is Gregory A. Smith, will act as writer and co-executive producer alongside Waithe. Variety reported Monday that the series is being referred to as a “surreal dark comedy.” Waithe tweeted out in confirmation of the news on Monday saying the show will have “very specific cultural references” and “a lot of shade.”
Fury is well-known for his podcast “The Read” which grew to widespread popularity for its unique perspectives on life from the viewpoint of a Black gay man. It also touches on subjects in politics, pop culture and relatable life stories. The podcast traveled nationally and internationally and became so successful that it celebrated its five-year anniversary at the Apollo Theater. The comedian also tours with his solo stand-up show “Furious Thoughts: Live,” and he was featured as a cameo in “Dear White People.” In addition, his YouTube channel has gained over 17 million views.

For now no casting or premier date has been announced. This project adds to the slew of others for Waithe including “The Chi,” “Queen & Slim” and “Twenties.”
