A Subway manager in Birmingham, Alabama was fired on Thursday after a video of a confrontation with a customer went viral, according to local reports.
The incident happened Tuesday night at the restaurant on Valley Avenue. The customer, Antuan, told reporters he stopped by to visit his sister on her first day of work. According to reports, a manager told him he was loitering and asked him to leave. The exchange escalated, and the manager used a racial slur. Antuan recorded part of the confrontation, and the video spread online.
The manager, identified in reports as April, was fired, and the location was closed for additional employee training.
April has since given her side of the story. She said she asked Antuan to leave because the new employee was in training and did not need a distraction. She also claimed he punched her in the face, that she pushed him out the door because she felt she was in danger, and that the slur came out afterward. Baller Alert could not independently confirm her account, and the video did not settle what happened before it started recording.
April said she regrets what she said. “I said the wrong word. I’m sorry for it,” she told reporters, adding that she is accepting her punishment.
