Yara Shadidi Wants “Grown-Ish” Creator Kenya Barris To Cast “Wider Array Of Skin Tones”

YaraShadidi wants “Grown-Ish” and “Black-Ish” creator #KenyaBarris to cast Black people with darker complexions.

Black-ish’s spinoff “Grown-ish” made its debut earlier this year and has since gained a mass, loyal audience.

Viewers love the show, much like they do “Black-ish,” for its raw and candid take on life and the issues that affect the Black community. But even though the show had an entire episode on colorism, it still missed the mark for its lack of dark-skinned cast members and fans have voiced their concerns.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Luckily fans aren’t the only ones to find an issue with the casting. Lead actress Shadidi said she has expressed her feelings to Barris about having more dark skin tones represented on the show. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the young Hollywood star also touched on the youth being excluded from current events topics.

“The knowledge disparity stems from the fact that news isn’t marketed to me and my peers,” she said. “It’s as though it doesn’t pertain to us, even though half of these policies that are being implemented will affect us. We know people who are immigrants, we know people who are undocumented.”

“Grown-ish” season 2 is set to premier in 2019.
