Attorney Ben Crump statement on behalf of the family of Nolan Wells after the Horn Island death

The family of Nolan Wells has retained prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump, escalating the search for answers in the death of the 18-year-old college football player who went out to Horn Island to celebrate the Fourth of July and never made it home. Crump confirmed Tuesday that his firm had been hired by the Wells family, and he called on investigators to pursue the case with urgency and full transparency.

Nolan Xavier Wells was a wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College and a 2025 graduate of Ocean Springs High School, where he was a multi sport athlete his community turned out to watch on Friday nights. He was preparing to return for the upcoming football season and would have turned 19 next month. On National Signing Day in 2025, he told WLOX it was a blessing to continue his football career at Southwest Mississippi, a moment his family and coaches later described as everything he had worked toward.

On Saturday, July 4, Nolan Wells went out to Horn Island with a group of friends on a boat. The barrier island sits about 10 miles south of Pascagoula off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. According to Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter, he was last seen around 3 p.m. wearing blue swim trunks and sunglasses. United Cajun Navy incident commander Josh Gill said Wells had been talking to a girl on the north end of the island before he was separated from the group. At some point he was also separated from his phone, which his mother, Christine Wonsley, said was later returned to her. When he did not come home, Wonsley reported him missing late Saturday night.

The search that followed lasted more than 40 hours and pulled in multiple agencies, including the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, the Gulf Islands National Seashore, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the volunteer United Cajun Navy. Wonsley shared photos from the outing on Facebook, hoping someone had seen her son.

On Monday morning, July 6, a park ranger found a body in the water on the northwest end of Horn Island at around 8:45 a.m. That afternoon, the family confirmed on Facebook that the body was Nolan Wells, with his mother and his grandfather, Christopher Wells Sr., both speaking publicly about their devastation. Coroner Bruce Lynd told WLOX he had no reason to believe it was not Wells but said he would wait for confirmation, and on Tuesday afternoon he confirmed the identity through dental records. An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday, July 7 at the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office Coast Lab.
What investigators have not said publicly is how Nolan Wells died. Sheriff Ledbetter said there was no indication of drug or alcohol use, but noted the coroner would know more once the investigation and a toxicology report were complete. No official cause of death has been released, and that gap is a large part of why the family has now brought in Crump.

In his statement, Crump described Nolan Wells as a beloved son, teammate, and friend who went out to celebrate the holiday and never came home. He said the family deserves answers and the truth, and that his team would not rest until every fact about what happened on Horn Island is brought into the light. Crump is one of the most recognized civil rights and personal injury attorneys in the country, known for representing families in high profile cases, and his involvement signals that the Wells family wants an independent and thorough accounting of their son’s final hours.

The loss has moved all of South Mississippi. Ocean Springs head football coach Jake Bramlett said his program is grieving alongside the family and remembered Wells as a young man whose character spoke louder than his accomplishments. Ocean Springs High principal Dr. Jacob Dykes called him remarkable, kind, and hardworking, someone who left a lasting impression on everyone around him. Southwest Mississippi Community College president Dr. J. Steven Bishop said the entire Southwest family was heartbroken and that counselors and local ministers would be made available for teammates and friends as they returned to campus.

For now, the people who loved Nolan Wells are left holding tributes and photographs while they wait on the results of an autopsy and an investigation that has not yet explained how an 18-year-old who went to the water to celebrate a holiday did not come back. Crump’s message made clear the family intends to keep asking until it does.
