Atlanta Public Schools is doing its part to ensure children and families are fed during the food assistance pause. APS has begun giving out free groceries every month to families in the district.
The program, which started on October 27th, will host monthly food giveaways at the Family & Student Support HUB. From 10 a.m. to noon, families can pull up and grab groceries with no red tape and no strings attached. The event will repeat on the last Monday of each month through the school year.
The program is powered by APS staff and volunteers in partnership with the Atlanta Community Food Bank. It’s not just a helping hand. It’s a safety net for thousands of students and their loved ones left in limbo.
SNAP, the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is set to run out of money by November 1 due to the ongoing government shutdown. With nearly 12 percent of Americans depending on SNAP to put food on the table, the pause leaves a major gap.
APS serves around 50,000 students, most of whom are Black, according to recent data. Leaders say the grocery program will continue as long as needed. Meanwhile, lawmakers remain gridlocked, offering few answers.
