Veteran R&B artist Brian McKnight has initiated legal action, alleging that a series of public statements and online commentary caused serious damage to his name, career, and family life.
According to court filings, McKnight claims several individuals and media figures participated in what he describes as a coordinated effort to profit from “malicious character assassination.” The lawsuit names his former wife, Julie McKnight, as well as his son Brian McKnight Jr., commentators Marc Lamont Hill and Tasha K, and the New York Post.
McKnight contends that the group promoted a “shockingly dishonest” and “sensational but false narrative” about his relationship with his children. Among the claims challenged in the lawsuit are allegations that he abandoned his family and refused to tell his late son, Niko, that he loved him during the final stage of his illness.
The singer argues those accusations are false and were spread in a manner designed to maximize public attention and reputational harm. He further alleges that the repeated circulation of those statements intensified public scrutiny and caused lasting personal and professional consequences.
In addition to disputing claims connected to his son, McKnight also accuses Tasha K of making separate false statements online, including allegations that he was unfaithful and had sexual contact with a minor. The lawsuit asserts those claims were defamatory and unsupported.
McKnight states that the cumulative effect of the allegations has harmed business opportunities, strained family relationships, and negatively impacted his standing in the entertainment industry. He says the “relentless and persistent assault upon his character” left him with no reasonable alternative but to seek relief through the courts.
The filing requests monetary damages, though a specific amount was not publicly detailed. None of the defendants named in the suit had publicly responded at the time of publication. The case is expected to proceed through the civil court system in the coming months.
