The dramatic saga between Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets is coming to an end. The Nets traded Irving to the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday, just days after the embattled star requested a trade.
The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports that in exchange for Irving, Brooklyn will get Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, a first-round draft pick, and multiple second-round picks.
Irving, 30, has averaged 27.1 points, 5.3 assists, and 5.1 rebounds for the Nets in 40 games this season. His relationship with the Nets organization has been tense over the last couple of seasons. He refused to get vaccinated in accordance with New York’s COVID-19 policy and sat out for the majority of last season. Earlier this season, he was suspended eight games without pay for promoting an anti-semitic movie on Twitter.
It was reported last month that Irving was prepared to stay in Brooklyn and wanted to discuss a contract extension with the franchise. Ultimately, he demanded to be traded. He was considering sitting the rest of the season if he wasn’t dealt by Thursday’s trade deadline.
Dinwiddie, who previously played for the Nets from 2016-2021, has averaged 17.7 points and 5.3 assists this season with the Mavericks. He is earning $20 million this season and is set to make $21 million next year.
Finney-Smith, who has played all of his seven seasons in the league in Dallas, has averaged 9.1 points and 4.7 rebounds this season. He currently makes $12.4 million and signed a three-year contract extension in February.
