Trump Continues To Drag Stephen A. Smith, Calls Him "Dumb As A Rock"

What started as a basketball conversation quickly turned into a political showdown. Stephen A. Smith is firing back after Donald Trump questioned his intelligence, and instead of simply trading insults, the ESPN personality escalated the moment into something bigger: a direct challenge.

Speaking on “First Take,” Smith responded to Trump’s remarks by saying:

“You wanna talk about IQ, I could say I put my IQ against yours any day of the week. I can go one better. I could ask you why you been running from me the last year since I wanted to talk to you. I could ask you to debate me since you think you’re that dude. We could go a myriad of ways.”

The exchange began after Smith criticized Trump’s appearance at Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden. During “First Take,” Smith argued that a presidential visit would create logistical headaches for New York City and called the decision selfish, narcissistic, and unnecessary. He even joked that if the Knicks lost, he would blame Trump for disrupting the energy surrounding the game.

The Knicks ultimately lost to the Spurs, and Trump was asked about Smith’s comments afterward.

Trump responded by saying Smith seemed like a “nice guy” but suggested he lacked the intelligence necessary to run for president, stating that a person needs a “high IQ” for the job and that he did not believe Smith possessed it. Reports indicate Trump made the remarks while discussing speculation surrounding Smith’s growing political profile.

That context matters.

Over the past year, Smith has increasingly stepped outside the sports world and into political conversations. He has appeared on major news programs, discussed national issues, and openly criticized both Democrats and Republicans. His commentary has generated enough attention that discussions about a possible future political run, once viewed as a joke, have become recurring talking points across media platforms.

What makes Smith’s response notable is that he avoided getting trapped in a simple name-calling exchange. Instead, he reframed the conversation around access and accountability.

By questioning why Trump has not accepted an interview invitation and challenging him to a debate, Smith shifted attention away from the insult itself and toward whether the two men would ever engage directly.

The moment also continues a long-running pattern in Trump’s public rhetoric. Trump has frequently used intelligence-based attacks against critics and media personalities over the years, often labeling opponents as “low IQ” during public disputes.

Now Smith is turning that same language back into a public test.

Whether a debate ever happens remains unclear. What is clear is that a feud that started with basketball has evolved into a much larger conversation about politics, influence, and who gets taken seriously in the national arena.

For years, Stephen A. Smith built his brand by challenging athletes and coaches. Now he’s openly challenging a president.

And unlike most sports debates, this one isn’t ending when the clock hits zero.
