Hulu and Disney+ are catching heat as thousands of subscribers say they’re done with both platforms. The backlash comes after ABC, which is owned by Disney, suspended Jimmy Kimmel for his remarks about conservative commentator Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
That move set off a firestorm online, with hashtags like #CancelDisneyPlus and #CancelHulu trending as viewers accuse the company of bowing to political pressure instead of defending free expression. Many say this is less about Kimmel himself and more about what they view as corporate censorship.
But the Kimmel controversy isn’t the only reason people are pulling the plug. Streaming fatigue is real, and subscribers are already fed up with higher prices, stricter rules on password sharing, and content spread across too many platforms. Disney+ and Hulu are often bundled together, so when one gets canceled, both usually go.
The bigger picture? Consumers are questioning whether these services are worth the money, and whether Disney as a company aligns with their values. Brand trust is becoming just as important as new shows or exclusive content.
While it’s unclear how many people have actually canceled versus just threatened to do so, Google searches for “cancel Disney+” and “cancel Hulu” have surged to their highest levels in a year. Even if not every protester follows through, the trend shows growing frustration that could hurt Disney long-term.
