The charges against a Canadian trucker who was duped into smuggling weed across the border have been dropped.
Federal prosecutors have decided not to pursue charges against 32-year-old Tasbir Singh, who was found with more than 2,200 pounds of marijuana in his truck during a stop at the Fort Street Cargo facility in Detroit in July. The haul was estimated at $3.2 million. Detroit-based border agents detained him. Singh told agents that he believed his truck was full of compression springs from North York, Ontario, to be transported to Ohio. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, Singh never got out of his vehicle to examine what was being loaded into the truck, therefore unaware of what the product was.
Ellen Michaels, the attorney representing Singh, said that the drug dealers hacked into the trucking company’s system and created a fake springs order to transport the weed.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office filed a request on July 22nd to have the criminal complaint against Singh dismissed without prejudice, meaning that the charges could be refiled later. He was facing a minimum of five years behind bars.
“I had not done anything wrong,” Singh said. “They did not believe me when I told them that I am innocent.”
