ChatGPT is officially stepping into the advertising era, marking a major shift in how one of the world’s most valuable AI products plans to sustain itself.
For months, both tech insiders and everyday users have been asking the same question: how does OpenAI, now valued at $500 billion, turn massive adoption into long-term revenue? This week, the company offered a clear answer. Ads are coming to ChatGPT.
In a Friday blog post, OpenAI announced it will soon begin testing limited advertising in the United States for users on its free tier and its newly launched Go plan. Go accounts, which cost $8 per month, rolled out globally on Friday. OpenAI framed the move as a way to keep ChatGPT accessible to free users while generating income from people who are not ready to commit to higher-priced subscriptions.
The company emphasized that its more expensive plans will remain ad-free. Users on Pro, Plus, Business, and Enterprise tiers will not see advertising during this initial rollout.
According to OpenAI, the ads will appear at the bottom of a conversation and will be related to the topic a user is discussing. Users will also have options. They will be able to dismiss ads, view explanations for why certain ads are shown, and disable ad personalization entirely. OpenAI added that it will not serve ads to users it believes are under 18.
Concerns about whether advertising could influence chatbot responses were addressed directly. OpenAI said ChatGPT will maintain “answer independence,” meaning ads will not affect how questions are answered. The company also stated that it will not sell user data to advertisers.
From a business standpoint, the strategy creates two potential revenue paths. Advertising opens the door to monetizing the large base of free and Go-tier users. At the same time, some users may decide that avoiding ads is worth paying for, which could increase subscriptions to higher-tier plans.
OpenAI also positioned the decision as aligned with its broader mission. In the same blog post, the company said its “pursuit of advertising is always in support of” its goal that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.
As ChatGPT continues to move from experimental tool to everyday utility, advertising signals a new phase. The platform is no longer just focused on growth. It is now locking in how it plans to pay for its future.
