Coco Gauff vs Naomi Osaka Is Happening—And It Could Shake Up the U.S. Open

Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka

Coco Gauff has had a rollercoaster of a week at the 2025 U.S. Open. After breaking down in tears during her second-round match, the 21-year-old came back stronger than ever on Saturday, breezing past Magdalena Frech in straight sets: 6-3, 6-1. Now, Gauff is just one win away from a quarterfinal appearance, but standing in her way is none other than Naomi Osaka.

For tennis newcomers, this is a huge matchup. Gauff is one of the sport’s rising stars. Osaka is a four-time Grand Slam champion, making a powerful comeback after stepping away from tennis in recent years to focus on her mental health and motherhood. The two will meet on Monday in a fourth-round match that promises high emotion, big serves, and electric energy.

“I was really trying to enjoy myself out there today,” Gauff told fans after her third-round win. “Earlier this week, I was overwhelmed. But today I played free.”

She’s been working hard to improve her serve, hiring a new coach, Gavin MacMillan, just days before the tournament. That decision is already paying off. In round one, Gauff hit only 61% of her first serves. In her latest match, that jumped to 76%.

Osaka, meanwhile, has looked sharp in her return. Her movement is smooth, her shots are powerful, and she’s playing with the calm confidence of a veteran who’s been here before.

With both players in form, Monday’s match is shaping up to be one of the best of the tournament. For fans new to tennis, it’s the perfect intro to what the sport is all about: drama, talent, and two women determined to win.
