Danny Simmons Wasn’t Just Russell Simmons And Rev Run’s Brother -- He Was A Black Art Powerhouse

Danny Simmons did not need the loudest name in the room to leave one of the deepest marks.

The abstract painter, poet, author, and philanthropist died at 72, according to family statements shared Monday, June 15. Simmons, the older brother of Russell Simmons and Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons, built a legacy that stretched from gallery walls to spoken-word stages to youth arts programs that gave young creatives room to see themselves in the work.

“It is with a profound sense of loss that we honor and celebrate the life of Danny Simmons Jr., a beacon of love and creativity. He was not just a brother, father, uncle, grandfather, and loving husband; he was a vibrant artist, dedicated supporter of creatives, and a cherished friend,” the family statement read.

It continued, “Though he has transitioned from this world, his legacy of kindness, generosity, and artistic brilliance will forever shine brightly in our hearts. The family respectfully asks for privacy during this time.”

Russell called his brother “the true artist in the family,” adding, “His poetry, art, and ideas shaped how we think and gave us the freedom to dream beyond limits. He cared deeply about the underserved communities of color and encouraged us to give back.” Russell continued, “Danny was my best friend—we spoke every day. He taught me how to be a better human being and how to be a man.”

That impact was not just sentimental. In 1995, Danny co-founded the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation with Russell and Rev Run, an organization dedicated to giving underserved youth access to contemporary art education while supporting artists, curators, and new audiences.

He also helped shape Def Poetry Jam, playing an instrumental role in conceiving and co-producing the HBO series and winning a Tony Award for the Broadway version, according to Mural Arts.

As a painter, Simmons developed what has been described as Neo-African Abstract Expressionism, pulling from African visual traditions, rhythm, spirituality, and movement. His work has been exhibited or placed with institutions including the Smithsonian, Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Academy of Music, the United Nations, and the Schomburg Center for Black Culture.

“Danny embraced fine arts while watching his mother, also an artist and painter,” his website says. “He’d eventually take on her love for painting and his father’s love for the written word, becoming renowned in both avenues of expression.”

Aoki Lee Simmons wrote, “My Uncle Danny has kept Rush Philanthropic running ALONE for years, because he did not want to stop serving the children in his community and giving them the opportunity to experience the healing, transformation and self understanding and self confidence that art brings.” She added, “He held the early Simmons family together, there is no Run DMC, no Def Jam, no NOTHING without Danny Simmons.”
