HMC Farms is recalling peaches, plums, and nectarines sold nationwide due to a listeria outbreak.

On Monday, it was reported that the outbreak has led to 11 illnesses, including one death and 10 hospitalizations.

In a food safety alert, the CDC stated, “investigators are working to determine if any additional fruit or products made with this fruit may be contaminated.”

According to the agency, Kingsburg’s HMC Farms is recalling peaches, plums, and nectarines sold between May 1 and November 15 this year, as well as during the same period in 2022. This recall comes after the FDA discovered listeria in an HMC Farms peach sample during late October testing.

Recalled nationwide by retailers like Walmart and Sam’s Club, the affected peaches, plums, and nectarines may carry listeria monocytogenes, posing a risk of severe or fatal infections.

As of November 17, the CDC reported cases of listeria in seven states: California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, and Ohio. In California, one person died, and another who was pregnant experienced preterm labor due to the illness.

Listeria infections pose severe risks to young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immunity. Symptoms in healthy individuals may include a high fever, a severe headache, and stomach pain. Moreover, the bacterium can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths.

According to CBS News, the recalled fruit was available as 2-pound bags branded “HMC Farms” or “Signature Farms” or as individual pieces marked with a “USA-E-U” code along with a number.

  • Yellow peach: 4044 or 4038
  • White peach: 4401
  • Yellow nectarine: 4036 or 4378
  • White nectarine: 3035
  • Red plum: 4042
  • Black plum: 4040

The CDC noted that the recall does not include organically grown fruit.
