Drake and 21 Savage have settled their brief legal battle with the company that owns Vogue.
Condé Nast, the parent company of the fashion publication, reached a settlement with the “Jimmy Crooks” duo this week. Though the specifics were not confirmed, a source told TMZ that 21 and Drake agreed to pay the company a lump sum for using a fake Vogue cover as part of their “Her Loss” rollout. Condé Nast was initially seeking $4 million in damages.
It appears both rappers were eager to wrap up the lawsuit, avoiding possible months in court. The company sued them in November for using their likeness to push the now-certified gold album. Condé Nast says they never consented to the faux magazine cover. In Thursday’s internal memo, Condé Nast confirmed securing a permanent injunction, which banned 21 and Drizzy from using the Vogue trademarks.
Not only did the collaborators pose for a fake cover, the inside of the booklet featured an altered photograph of the OVO founder and Vogue editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. The rappers pushed the magazine in a satirical campaign, claiming that it’d be hitting newsstands on November 4th. They even tagged Wintour in social media posts. Drake and 21 also unveiled comedic versions of themselves on “Saturday Night Live” and “The Howard Stern Show.”
While it was all meant in good fun, Vogue saw it as no laughing matter.
