A Florida family is facing federal charges for allegedly selling thousands of bottles of a bleach based solution marketed as a cure for coronavirus.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Mark and his sons Jonathan, Joseph and Jordan were each indicted on one count of conspiracy to commit fraud and two counts of criminal contempt. Prosecutors also allege the family threatened a federal judge who oversaw a civil case last year. The indictment is an accusation, and the defendants are presumed innocent.
The Food and Drug Administration has warned that bleach is not a cure for COVID 19 and should not be ingested.
Court documents filed in the Southern District of Florida say the family sold sodium chlorite and water under the name Miracle Mineral Solution, or MMS, through the Genesis II Church of Health and Healing. Prosecutors say it was made in a Bradenton backyard.
The documents allege the family averaged about $32,000 a month before pitching the product as a COVID 19 cure, and that revenue then jumped to about $123,000 a month. Prosecutors say more than 28,000 bottles were sold, bringing in over $1 million since March of last year.
Jonathan and Jordan have been held in Miami since being detained and were scheduled to be arraigned Monday. Prosecutors say Mark and Joseph are believed to be in Colombia.
