Drivers across the Sunshine State are feeling a quick hit at the pump as fuel costs climb sharply within just a few days. Florida gas prices increase past the national average as fuel costs across the state rose faster than the national rate over the past week, according to new figures released by the American Automobile Association.
AAA reported Monday that the national average price for regular gasoline increased about 36 cents, rising from roughly $3.11 last week to about $3.47 per gallon. In Florida, however, the jump was larger. The statewide average for regular unleaded climbed about 61 cents, moving from around $2.88 to approximately $3.49 per gallon.
Prices for other fuel grades also increased significantly.
Mid-grade gasoline rose about 62 cents during the same period, increasing from roughly $3.33 to about $3.95 per gallon. Premium gasoline followed closely behind, jumping around 60 cents from about $3.67 last week to roughly $4.27 per gallon statewide.
Diesel fuel recorded the largest spike.
According to AAA, the average price of diesel in Florida surged about $1.08 in a single week, rising from approximately $3.68 to about $4.76 per gallon. Diesel is widely used by trucks, trains, and cargo shipping operations, so higher prices often lead to increased transportation costs that can eventually impact food and retail prices.
South Florida drivers are seeing similar changes.
In Miami, the average price for regular gasoline increased about 56 cents, rising from roughly $2.90 to $3.46 per gallon. Mid-grade gasoline climbed to around $3.85, while premium fuel increased to about $4.09. Diesel prices in the city jumped about $1.07, reaching roughly $4.66 per gallon.
Fort Lauderdale also experienced price increases. Regular gasoline rose about 60 cents to roughly $3.52 per gallon. Mid-grade climbed to about $3.93, premium increased to around $4.24, and diesel reached approximately $4.70 per gallon.
Despite the recent surge, AAA noted that current prices still remain below the record-high fuel averages seen in 2022.
