Ladies and gentlemen, the future of driving is upon us with the successful launch of the flying car.
The electric vehicle, known as the X2, powered by Chinese manufacturer XPeng has taken its first flight in Dubai. The two-seater VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) ascended into the air on Monday, taking off from the Dubai Marina for its first public flight in front of curious onlookers. Eight propellers lift the stunning aircraft, with two placed at each corner of the car. During the 90-minute test flight, the vehicle was completely self-driven.
This impressive transportation method does not produce carbon emissions during its flights, a welcome relief to climate change enthusiasts who have fought for eco-friendly travel means. The vehicle also reaches speeds up to 130 mph in the sky, but it is unclear if this is its capability on land.
XPeng designed the automobile to tackle local trips, such as appointments and sightseeing, without having to sit in traffic. It remains to be seen how far the X2 can go in the sky without needing a recharge. While these are kinks that are sure to be worked out soon, XPeng President Brian Gu says the presentation in Dubai was a “major step” in making flying automobiles accessible to the world.
The company is not finished stopping with the X2, which is their fifth generation model. XPeng says they are ready to announce its sixth-generation prototype that will be able to drive on roads and take flight safely. Details surrounding this next innovation will be unveiled during 1024 XPeng Tech Day on October 24th.
XPeng is not the only company trying its hands at flying vehicles. TCab Tech and AutoFlight are among several companies investing billions into making flying cars a reality in forthcoming decades.
