Before red carpets and official titles entered the picture, Gabrielle Union says one of her most unforgettable encounters happened in a setting that could not have been more ordinary.
While attending a Sailgate with Dos Equis in Miami on Monday, January 19, Union reflected on how her relationships with high-profile figures began long before global fame reshaped their lives. She revealed that the first time she met Barack Obama was at a casual potluck hosted by a friend in Los Angeles, back when he was a junior senator from Chicago.
Union said she contributed a tuna casserole to the gathering, describing it as a simple, budget-friendly dish. According to her, Obama ate the casserole, a moment she now finds amusing, given the weight his name carries today. She explained that the meeting felt completely normal at the time, with no sense of history in the making.
“The first time I met [former] President Obama, he was a junior senator in Chicago, and it was a potluck at a friend’s house in L.A., and he happened to be invited. I think I made tuna casserole,” she recalled to People. “He definitely ate my tuna casserole. I could have put a little extra time into this, but I was also on a budget.”
The actress was in Miami celebrating her husband Dwyane Wade’s 44th birthday, with festivities stretching across several days. Union said Wade prefers birthdays centered on shared experiences rather than extravagant gifts, even if celebrations sometimes happen in quick moments between busy schedules.
Union also shared an update on their daughter, Kaavia James Union Wade, who is seven and staying active with dance, gymnastics, and horseback riding. She said gymnastics currently holds Kaavia’s strongest interest.
For Union, moments like a potluck dinner or a family birthday highlight what matters most. She says staying grounded is easier when the memories are rooted in real life, not headlines.
