The Georgia abortion murder case is putting a serious spotlight on how far state laws can go. A 31-year-old woman, Alexia Moore, is now facing a murder charge after police say she used abortion pills, including misoprostol, to end her pregnancy at around 22 weeks.
According to an arrest warrant from police in Kingsland, Moore went to a hospital on December 30 complaining of abdominal pain. Medical staff say she told them she had taken misoprostol, a drug commonly used in medication abortions, along with oxycodone. Medical records cited in the warrant estimate she was about 22 to 24 weeks pregnant, which is roughly six months and well beyond Georgia’s legal limit.
Police documents state the fetus was delivered at the hospital and lived for about an hour. Investigators also wrote that Moore allegedly told nurses she was responsible for the abortion. However, official medical findings have not ruled the death a homicide, with the Camden County coroner listing the cause and manner of death as undetermined.
Moore has been in custody since March 4 in Camden County, facing charges of murder and illegal drug possession. Court records show her attorney is pushing for bond and a speedy trial, while a hearing has already been scheduled. So now, the next move sits with District Attorney Keith Higgins, who must decide whether to take the case to a grand jury.
This case is getting attention because it could be one of the first times a woman in Georgia is prosecuted for ending her own pregnancy since the state passed its 2019 abortion law. That law recognizes a fetus as a legal person once cardiac activity is detected, which can happen as early as six weeks.
For now, all eyes are on what happens next.
