iPhone owners who suffered through slow phones when the company updated software may soon have a check coming.
Millions of Apple users with older iPhones can relate to having their phones comes to a crawl or overheat when new iOS updates come along. A lengthy court battle has concluded that Apple purposefully slowed down devices with older batteries to prevent shutdowns. Unfortunately, most iPhone users were unaware of this process.
“Only customers with an iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, or SE device were eligible if they ran the iOS 10.2.1 software (or a later version) before Dec. 21, 2017. The same goes for people who had an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus and downloaded iOS 11.2 or later before Dec. 21, 2017,” The Hill explained.
Apple will dish out between $310 million and $500 million to settle nearly three million claims. Multiple outlets have reported payments ranging from $65 and $90 for those who owned pre-2018 devices. Unfortunately, the deadline to file a claim closed in October 2020, so anyone unaware of the suit until now will not be compensated. The settlement was reached years ago, but due to multiple challenges, customers have yet to receive any money. Last week, Apple’s latest appeal was dismissed, meaning that the money will soon be unlocked for victims of slow phones. Claims poured in from across the world, all slamming the tech giant for preying on its customers. Some even accused Apple of slowing phones to motivate users to purchase new ones.
The payments are slated to begin soon, but an exact distribution date has not yet been revealed.
