J. Cole’s overseas basketball run hit an unexpected wall just as it was getting started.
What was supposed to be a short but meaningful stint in China quickly turned into a one-game appearance, as J. Cole’s basketball journey with the Nanjing Monkey Kings was cut short due to visa complications. The rapper, who has steadily returned to the sport in recent years, had planned to play at least three games this spring but couldn’t secure the proper work clearance in time.
Cole broke down the hectic timeline in his own words, explaining how work commitments collided with the logistics of playing overseas.
“I recorded Nadeska, Lost in Vegas, and then Melo all within one week,” he wrote in a blog post. “[I] had to immediately head to Hong Kong to wait for a visa so I could play basketball in mainland China. The work visa process took way longer than expected, so I was only able to play in one before heading back.”

Despite the abrupt ending, he didn’t walk away disappointed. Instead, he leaned into the moment for what it was. “I got to play 8 minutes in one of the top leagues in the world, got a few good looks but wasn’t able to hit one,” Cole added. “A couple more games and maybe those shots would have started to fall!”
The reception in China also left a lasting impression. Cole admitted he underestimated his global reach, saying he was “blown away” by the support and didn’t “realize there were so many people in China that rocked with my music.”
This latest chapter adds to his unconventional second act in basketball, following earlier appearances in Rwanda’s Basketball Africa League and Canada’s pro circuit. And while this run ended early, Cole is already thinking ahead, hinting he could return after tour. “I told the team that if I could stay in shape I would be down to play for a longer amount of games next year,” he said. “I’m wildin???? We’ll see. DREAMER.”
