Jennifer Hudson’s career is coming full circle in the most major way.
On a recent episode of The Jennifer Hudson Show, the multi-hyphenate star dropped a bombshell that she’s officially signed on as a producer for the upcoming Broadway revival of Dreamgirls. After winning an Oscar for her legendary turn as Effie White in the 2006 film, Hudson is now taking on a leadership role to ensure the story hits just as hard for a new generation of fans when it debuts this fall.
The timing of this news is perfect, as the production marks the first time the show has been on a Broadway stage since its original 1981 debut. Hudson expressed how much this project means to her, noting that she is ready to help steer the ship for this reimagined version. “This fall, Dreamgirls is coming back to Broadway for the very first time since its open 45 years ago in 1981,” Hudson said. “Now, it’s being reimagined for a whole new generation, which I am so excited about. Now, I finally get to tell you that I am a producer on the team for the revival of this iconic musical! There’s going to be so much more to share in time, but I’ve been having so much fun working with this amazing team, and I cannot wait to share the incredible production this fall.”
While everyone is dying to know who will be stepping into the roles of the Dreams, the team is keeping casting and specific opening dates a secret for now.
The legacy of Dreamgirls is heavy, originating with a powerhouse cast that featured Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine, and Jennifer Holliday. Holliday’s performance of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” remains a blueprint for vocal excellence and helped the original show rack up six Tony Awards and a Grammy.
Having Hudson involved as a producer bridges the gap between the 1981 stage classic and the 2006 blockbuster film, proving that the story of fame, soul, and sisterhood is truly timeless.
I am so excited to announce that I have joined the extraordinary producing team on the upcoming revival of Dreamgirls, returning to Broadway for the first time since it opened 45 years ago!
