Erik and Lyle Menendez, convicted of killing their parents in 1989, may soon be released after 34 years in prison. Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón has recommended resentencing the brothers, potentially reducing their convictions from first-degree murder to manslaughter.
The Menendez brothers, who admitted to the killings, argued they acted in self-defense after enduring years of sexual abuse by their father. While their initial trial in 1996 limited their ability to present that defense, new evidence has surfaced. A former Menudo band member claimed in a documentary that José Menendez sexually assaulted him as a minor, and a letter from Erik to a cousin supports allegations of abuse.
If the judge approves the resentencing, the brothers could be credited with time served and released. Their case, which captivated the nation during one of the first nationally televised trials, has seen renewed interest through documentaries and social media campaigns.
This move comes as Gascón, an advocate for reducing mass incarceration, faces reelection. The final decision on the Menendez brothers’ fate now rests with the court.
