Malik Beasley scored a much needed win in his illegal gambling probe. The Detroit Pistons guard is no longer under investigation by federal authorities over allegations of betting on NBA games and prop bets, his attorneys confirmed Friday.
Attorneys Steve Haney and Mike Schacter revealed that the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York has officially cleared Beasley, stating he is not a target in the probe.
“Months after this investigation commenced, Malik remains uncharged and is not the target of this investigation,” Haney said. “An allegation with no charge, indictment or conviction should never have the catastrophic consequence this has caused Malik. This has literally been the opposite of the presumption of innocence.”
The investigation surfaced in June, just before NBA free agency opened, which abruptly paused ongoing negotiations surrounding Beasley’s next contract. The 27-year-old had signed a one-year deal with the Pistons and was in discussions for a potential three-year, $42 million extension prior to the probe.
Despite being cleared, Beasley’s off-court challenges continue. Last month, lawsuits were filed against him by his barber, dentist, and sports agency over unpaid debts. Earlier this month, he was evicted from his Detroit residence after allegedly falling behind on $21,500 in rent. According to filings, his financial obligations may total up to $8 million.
With his legal status resolved, Beasley’s agents are expected to resume conversations with multiple NBA teams. However, it’s unclear how he plans to clear up his current money woes.
