Newly spotlighted documents are putting Matt Gaetz right back in the center of one of the most unsettling scandals tied to his name.
According to the New York Times, the information revives allegations dating back to 2017 involving a 17-year-old girl who was struggling financially, juggling school and a fast-food job, and staying in a homeless shelter at times. According to the records, the teen said she met Gaetz through people connected to a wider investigation. She claimed she had two sexual encounters with him while underage and that money later exchanged hands. One of the most striking details is her statement that she accepted money to help pay for her braces.
Ethics investigators reviewing the case previously concluded that there was “substantial evidence” that Gaetz paid for sex, including payments tied to the teen. They also noted that the girl’s age and financial struggle created a serious imbalance that left her at risk of exploitation. Gaetz has repeatedly denied all of the allegations, calling them false and insisting the claims are part of an attempt to extort him. He also points out that the Department of Justice did not file criminal charges against him. Still, the ethics findings, the teen’s circumstances, and the resurfacing of these details have renewed public scrutiny.
For many, the focus isn’t just on the alleged encounters but on the larger question of power, access, and what happens when a vulnerable minor crosses paths with someone in a position of influence.
