A shooting on the campus of Old Dominion University left two people critically injured Thursday morning and ended with the gunman dead, according to university officials.

The incident unfolded around 10:50 a.m. inside Constant Hall on the Norfolk, Virginia, campus. University officials said a gunman opened fire inside the building, injuring two individuals who were later transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. A hospital official confirmed both victims arrived around 11:15 a.m. in critical condition.
By early afternoon, the university issued an alert confirming the immediate threat had ended.
“This is an all clear notification. The emergency at Constant Hall has ended. There is no longer an active threat to the campus community. Avoid the area in and around Constant Hall where emergency officials continue to work.”
Authorities have not yet released details about the gunman or the circumstances that led to the shooting.
Old Dominion University President Brian O. Hemphill addressed the incident in a statement following the emergency response.
“Earlier today, March 12, 2026, Old Dominion University faced a tragedy on our main campus. I am grateful for the swift response of our police officers, emergency management personnel, and our partners at the City of Norfolk who promptly assisted the injured.”
He also announced that classes and campus operations were canceled for the remainder of the day while investigators continue their work.
Students who were inside the building described a chaotic scene as the situation unfolded. ODU sophomore Logan Hayes said he was taking a test in Constant Hall when the fire alarm sounded.
“As soon as he got outside, Logan told WAVY, ‘I heard about a multitude of gunshots go off and people just screaming.’”
Police secured the area while nearby schools were briefly placed on secure hold. Authorities continue to investigate the shooting.
