Shoppers looking for balloons and banners will soon find Party City back in stores, but not under its old standalone format. After shutting down its U.S. footprint following a second Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in 2024, the retailer is partnering with Staples to place party merchandise inside 700 locations nationwide. The companies say the rollout gives customers office basics and celebration supplies in one stop.
Joel Weinshanker, CEO of Ad Populum, said, “For as long as we can all remember, Party City has been the trusted go-to for balloons and party goods, known for quality, creativity and celebrations,” in a press release.
Party City began winding down in December 2024 after nearly 40 years in business. Most remaining stores were closed by February 2025, after workers were told corporate operations would end. Executives said the Staples deal “felt like a natural fit from the start,” and added, “Together, we’re making it easier for our many millions of combined loyal customers to celebrate and party with confidence at their local Party City, now at Staples.”
Marshall Warkentin, president of Staples U.S. retail, said, “By bringing Party City into Staples stores, we’re expanding what customers can accomplish in one place, combining helium balloons and party supplies with our print and marketing services to offer a complete solution for celebrations, from graduations to grand openings and everything in between,” said.
Launch promotions include buy two, get one free foil balloons, $5 off $25 purchases, and bouquet deals starting at $19.99. The comeback shows a legacy chain betting shelf space can revive demand while avoiding the heavy costs that sank hundreds of standalone stores before again this time nationwide for shoppers everywhere now.
