A fresh legal setback hit close to home for the Mahomes family this week, far from the Super Bowl spotlight. Pat Mahomes Sr., father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, was taken into custody on February 3 in Texas following an alleged violation of his probation terms.
TMZ reported that the arrest stemmed from a possible alcohol-related issue. Mahomes Sr. is currently under a five-year probation sentence connected to his most recent DWI conviction, the third on his record. That case came shortly after his son helped lead the Chiefs to another Super Bowl win in February 2024.
The 55-year-old former MLB player was booked in Smith County Jail at 8:53 AM. According to the District Attorney’s office, Mahomes Sr.’s SCRAM ankle monitor registered a high alcohol reading on January 1. That reading was cited as the basis for the probation violation report and led to his arrest weeks later.
Still, later testing raised questions about the initial alert.
“The doc states Mahomes provided urine samples later on both Jan. 5 and 9, and the results were negative for alcohol,” the report stated, noting no signs of alcohol use on those dates.
Mahomes Sr.’s history with DWI charges stretches back years. He was first arrested on September 12, 2008, and then again on February 26, 2019. In his most recent legal trouble, he was also stopped on July 12, 2024, for driving with an invalid license related to the DWI case. He ultimately pled guilty on August 27, 2024.
At sentencing the following month, Mahomes Sr. received 10 days in jail and was placed under intense supervision for the first year of his probation, which is set to continue through late 2025.
