Pras Michel, the Grammy‑winning rapper from the iconic group The Fugees, has been sentenced to 14 years behind bars in a sweeping federal conspiracy case.
Once celebrated for chart‑topping hits with The Fugees and a storied career in hip‑hop, Michel’s legacy has now taken a dramatic turn. In April 2023, a federal jury found him guilty on 10 counts, including acting as an unregistered foreign agent and conspiring to funnel illegal donations into U.S. political campaigns.
According to prosecutors, Michel collaborated with Malaysian financier Jho Low to channel millions of dollars into U.S. campaigns, some of it aimed at influencing the 2012 reelection of Barack Obama and allegedly pressuring the U.S. Department of Justice to drop investigations into Low’s dealings.
During sentencing, the trial judge called Michel “well educated but very arrogant” and said he showed “no remorse.” The court set his surrender date for January 27, 2026. Michel’s spokesperson offered a brief statement following the ruling: while acknowledging the moment’s difficulty, they noted this “is not the end of his story.”
