Conditions at Rikers Island are reportedly so bad that NYC’s Mayor Bill de Blasio will transfer 100 NYPD officers over to make up for the lack of correction officers at the complex.
Correction officers were originally responsible for escorting inmates to court appearances and guarding them during the proceedings. Now the mayor wants cops to take over many of those duties.
“We’ll use overtime as necessary to help ensure that we can get the most done with minimal impact on other work the NYPD is doing,” de Blasio said during his daily press briefing yesterday.
