11-year-old Marley Dias of West Orange, NJ, says that she was tired of reading about white boys and dogs. So, Marley’s mom posed the question–what are you going to do about it?
Marley at that moment decided to start  her own campaign book drive.
The idea to start #1000BlackGirlBooks came about after she expressed her frustration with her school’s lack of reading material.
“I told her I was sick of reading about white boys and dogs, [referring specifically to “Where the Red Fern Grows” and “Shiloh” series] And I told her I was going to start a book drive, where black girls are the main characters in the book and not background characters or minor characters,” Marley said.
Marley is a determined 11-year-old girl. She has also fed orphans in Ghana and was awarded a grant from Disney.
Big things really do come in small packages. Young Marley is a force to be reckoned with.
